Best Sophomore's Day Ever!

Every could has a silver lining. Just think about it; Everyone getting their a**es handed to them, 2 weeks holiday and best of all, not having to endure anymore of the "cultural extravaganza" for a really looong time... - When was the last time a single event managed to accomplish as much? (And that too an event organized completely by the juniors).

I suspect the aftermath is yet to come. Meanwhile I'm having a jolly good time at home.

Advanced Onam Greetings....

Introducing 'Calendar'

You may have noticed the lil white oddity on the sidebar. I think the name is self explanatory. Eventful days are marked in RED. Click on the to view the event and umber of days to it. The full Calendar can be accessed here.

Get Stroustrup

In case you couldn't get your hands on our HOD's favorite C++ book, here it is in slapstick eBook form:

Bjarne Stroustrup - The C++ Programming Language [Special 3rd Edition]

On a further note this is the *Special* 3rd edition. Don't ask why....

Impedance in the Frequency Domain

Was looking through Network Analysis for this week's test. I recall Biji sir having substituted sL and 1/sC as impedance in the frequency domain being given the initial conditions. I had wondered HOW that was feasible and asked around but nobody at the time could give a straight answer (As for asking sir himself the first and last time I did so ended in disaster). Having caught up a bit I have come up with two answers:

1) sL and 1/sC are multiplied with the respective current functions in the Laplace transformed KVL equations. So it is safe to assume that sL and 1/sC are indeed the impedance of the inductor and capacitor and write the KVL quation in the s-domain directly. (Ref. Network Analysis and Synthesis, Franklin F. Kuo)

2) (WARNING: Made this one up myself!) What we refer as s is simply a complex frequency variable of the form

s = σ + jω

And since jωL and 1/jωC are the impedences in polar form the assumption is valid. However there is still the question of what happened to σ. Any guesses?

Pledge

Latest in from the HOD - "Applied is the worst batch I've seen. You (EC walas) are a lot better than them but you still have a long way to go. Applied students talk behind my back etc..... etc.....". Couple that with "EC departmentine nanum keduthan Applied enna oru batchum" declared the past Monday and tell me you're not even slightly ashamed. I like the HOD; he's a pretty nice guy. But so far we've abused that fact, dare I say, with minimal consequences. An ill word from the HOD is far worse than any punishment and not because it has anything to do with placements. Its a matter of dignity. Whether you're innocent of the whole thing or not doesn't matter. We swim and sink together (the latter was repeatedly proved beyond doubt!).

So how do we free ourself from this predicament? Take a pledge that - We will not 'alamb' as much, that we won't whistle between sessions or comment or find "heroism" in either, that we will at least try to win back the HOD's favor, that we will read this blog everyday and take my advice :P .... and anything else rooted on your scruples; for your good and ours.

We've sank enough, its time we kick the water....

Pre-training

Lately I've been feeling increasingly bossed around. By who? Our professors of course. Whether its practicals or theory sessions its 'Sheri sir, Okay sir, Sir parayum pole...'. I've never been pushed around this much before. If it weren't for the sessionals I would not have given a damn. But sadly 33% of the total marks means our teachers get to pull the strings.

But then again this is the same shit we'll have to take from our bosses 4 years from now the only difference being that they can bite into our livelihood. I guess, college teaches you a lot more than the prescribed syllabus....
